Chicken Chettinad

Chicken Chettinad is a spicy indian chicken dish (tamilnadu style)

INGREDIENTS
 

2 lbs of cut chicken
2 large onions chopped
3 large tomatoes chopped
1 tsp red chilli powder
1 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp coriander powder
juice of one lime
2 tbsp cooking oil
2 cups water
salt to taste
A sprig of curry leaves
1/2 cup chopped cilantro
PASTE:
1 inch piece of ginger chopped
4 large garlic cloves
2 tsp poppy seeds
6 whole red chillies
3/4 cup grated fresh coconut
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp fennel seeds
1 inch piece of cinnamon
2 cloves
2 cardamoms


DIRECTIONS

  1. In a skillet roast the coconut along with red chillies , cumin , fennel , cinnamon , cloves and cardamoms. Keep roasting in a medium flame till coconut is browned .Let is cool down and grind to a paste along with ginger , garlic and poppy seeds.

  2. Heat the oil in a pan .Saute the onions till browned .Add the curry leaves , turmeric powder , red chilli powder , coriander powder and the ground paste . Saute till oil separates. Now add the chopped tomatoes and stir fry till tomatoes are soft and mushy.

  3. Now add the chicken pieces along with salt . Mix well and cook for 5 minutes.

  4. Add the lemon juice with the required amount of water . Mix well . Cover and simmer for about 20 minutes until the chicken becomes tender.

  5. Garnish with chopped cilantro .

  6. Serve with rice or roti.
